02_ARTEK

2015 marks the 80th anniversary of Artek, the Finnish furniture company founded by four young idealists, Alvar and Aino Aalto, Maire Gullichsen and Nils-Gustav Hahl, in the context of the still-young international modernist movement. A platform for modern art, industry, interior design and propaganda, the company’s self-described purpose was ‘to sell furniture and to promote a modern culture of living by exhibitions and other educational means.’ Eighty years after its creation, and in the radical spirit of its founders, Artek is investing in material research, in the development of systems and standards, and in sustainable design.

The 2014-15 edition dealt with the theme Seasonal Objects.

Maisons des Jeunes (Youth Houses) is developed with the collaboration of C-Paje, a collective for the Promotion of the Animation of Youngsters and Children, gathering together 750 professionals and 7000 children from the Walloon and Brussels area. During the Triennial, they will show the results of two workshops: ‘Create your own lamp with cheap materials’ (led by the artist Laurie Marcelet) and ‘Eco-design furniture’ (led by Kalbut Design).
